Scary thoughts - Opiate of the masses

11 04 2008

The scariest thing is the thought that there might be nothing after we die. Karl Marx described religion as the ”opiate of the masses” i.e. religion may not necessarily “true”, but is useful for keeping the populace docile. If one were to look at the matter objectively, it would seem that humanity is simply part of the greater cycle of evolution, a complex organism with no credible evidence to support the comforting idea of an afterlife. However, I have personally experienced something of the supernatural, whether my experiences have been hallucinations, or real examples of something more, no one can tell. But for my peace of mind I have to believe in the afterlife, I am not so bold as to think that the afterlife is going to be happy happy joy joy, on the contrary, I acknowledge that I have lived a less than perfect life, and I may end up going to hell. But I would at least like to know that I had a shot at heaven rather than a shot at nothingness.

Scary thoughts …  do you buy into the opiate of the masses?
